What is a Theme and why we need to choose it wisely?

In simple words.
Themes allow you to change the interface or the look of your website.
Just like, when you change the theme in your mobile, it changes the look, colour, fonts, menu etc of your mobile interface.
Similarly, changing the theme of your website will change the look of your website.

Choosing a right theme is very Important

Choosing an important theme for your website is very important, as it will express your business, product or motive of your website.
For example, if you have a website on the latest news, you cannot display a theme that is related to game collections or vice versa.
As it will not make any sense.

There are thousands of themes within WordPress, paid as well as free ones.
You have an option to either get the free themes or the paid from the WordPress directory.
WordPress also allows you to install, third-party themes as well.
One of the best thing about WordPress is, it also allows you to search for the filter as per your requirements, using the filter option.
Below we will discuss all of it in detail.

If you are new; WordPress gives you a default theme(Twenty Seventeen)
Well, this is something which was given to me, when I was new to WordPress too.

So lets us now understand on how to Install and Upload a Theme in WordPress for your website.

In order to change or Install or upload a theme in WordPress, you will need to first go to the option of Appearance>Theme.
You should be able to find this option on the left-hand side of your dashboard(toolbar).

After this. You should see a screen something like this.

Let us understand this screen
You will see two options,
Add new and a Search Box that will allow you to search within the installed theme.

Add New:

This option will basically allow you to install a theme or upload a theme.(area of focus in this blog)

Search installed theme:

If you have a lot of themes already installed, this option will allow you to search within those installed theme

For example, over here I have 8 themes that are already installed in my WordPress.


If I want to search for a specific theme within these installed themes, then I will use this option.

Our area of focus is Add New since this option will allow us to add a new theme or upload a new theme.

Once you click on add new you will see a screen something like this.

This two options will allow you to upload a new theme and another one will allow you to search for the theme within WordPress directory

How to Search and Install a Theme

In order to search for a theme go to Add New Option

You need to enter the name of the theme and WordPress will then give you a list of themes with that related keyword.
So you either enter the exact name of the theme or somewhat related keywords to get a specific theme.

This is an example of how to install a theme.
Over here I will show you how to install a theme.
The theme that I will install is Phlox.
So I will go to the search box and type PHlox.

The search result will then show me that theme.

If you hover over to that theme, you will see options like Install and Details & Preview. (applicable to any theme on WordPress)

So you need to click on install and activate the theme.
This will activate the theme on your WordPress website.

So this is how to install a theme to your WordPress Website

Do you know how to preview a theme the correct way before Installing it?

Before you install any theme, everyone wants to make sure, on how that particular theme will look like.
You would like to know the font style, the colour palates of the theme etc.
Here is the trick on how to find this.

If you like a particular theme, hover over it and click on Details and Preview.
We will take an example of this theme. Miniva.

Once I click on Details and preview, I will land on a page something like this

Over here, you will never an exact idea of how this theme will precisely look like.
Hence to find this, you will need to look at the instructions on the left-hand side.

In most of the theme, you will see the note written: See the theme demo at: *#*@*$**&^

Copy the URL and paste in the new tab.
And this is how you will get the see the actual preview of the theme.

Remember that all theme may not have this demo option.

Other options to search for a theme within WordPress:

Just side of search theme option you will see a number of options like:

Featured
Popular
Latest
Favourite and 
Feature Filter.

As the options suggest, it will allow you to search for themes.
The best thing about WordPress is, it will allow you to also filter the theme as per your requirement.

How to Upload a Theme in WordPress.

If you have downloaded or purchased a third party theme, then this option is for you.

All you need to do is Add New<Upload Theme.

You will then need to upload the .zip file.
You can either click on choose file or just drag and drop the file item(.zip file)

After this, click on Install now.

Wait for a couple of seconds so that the WordPress unpacks all the details of this theme.

After this, the theme will be installed
Click on activate in order to activate the theme
You should also see this uploaded theme among the list of other installed themes.
