Welcome to this series, where we will be learning the basics of WordPress, so that you can start your own Website from scratch. So over here, I will teach you how to install and Upload Plugins to WordPress Website.
What is a Plugin in WordPress?
WordPress is best when it comes to Plugins.
Do you know what is the benefits of these plugins, You can use them with just one click install.
Plugins extend and expand the functionality of WordPress.
It is just like Upgrading your machine with new features.
You do not need any developer to organize a particular task on your website. Hence, to Install and Upload Plugins to WordPress is very easy.
There are thousands of Plugins on WordPress and you can make the best out of it.
However, make sure, that you only install the plugins that you need, as unnecessary plugins downloads will slow down your website.
Firstly Log into your WordPress Dashboard
In Order Install a Plugin, you need to will need to first login to your WordPress CMS
After you have done this you are ready to further take the initial steps.
You are now on the dashboard of your website.
This will allow you to change or upgrade the interface of your website.
On the left-hand side, you will see several options that will allow you to make changes.
Here we are only discussing, how to install or upload a plugin to WordPress.
On the left-hand side is an example of how your dashboard will look like.
The area Plugin is been marked for your reference since we will be installing and uploading our plugins using this option
So let us get started.
Go to Plugin area that you will find at the left bottom of your screen.|
Just hover over it and you will then see three more options.
Installed plugins: This will have the list of installed plugins
Add new: This will allow you to add a new plugin ( This is what we will learn today)
Plugin editor: These options will be visible on what kind of installed plugins you already have.
If you have not installed any plugin yet, you may only see the option to add a new plugin.
To add a plugin to your WordPress CMS click on >Add New Plugin.
After you click on Add plugin, you will see a list all popular, featured, Recommended or Favourite plugin(if any).
However, we are focusing here on only how to install or add a new plugin to your WordPress website.
There are Two Ways, on How you can Add a Plugin.
- Search plugin within WordPress Search box
- Manually Upload Plugin from your desktop
Below we will understand both of these concepts:
Search plugin within WordPress search box:
As mentioned that there are thousands of plugins within WordPress Plugin Directory.
So all you need to do is search the plugin in the search box and you will get the plugin.
You can also choose to filter the search sorting it via
I prefer to search via default filter “Keyword”.
You can try to search your plugins by Tags or even Author if you have a recommendation by anyone.
I will be installing a plugin: “Elementor Page Builder” just to give you an example.
Go to the search box and search for the plugin “Elementor”.
After this, you should be able to see this Plugin in your search result.
Click on install.
The plugin will start installing.
Once the installation is complete, click on activate.
If you do not activate any plugins in WordPress, It will not work.
Once you have activated the plugin, you will be redirected to the plugins installed page, and you should see the list of activated plugins.
Plugin > Installed Plugin.
And that’s it.
You can manage or update Plugins from installed plugins Tab
If in case you get an error installing any plugin, do not panic and try to reload the page.
2. Manually Upload Plugin from the desktop.
In order to install a plugin this way, you need to have a .zip file of the plugin.
This will allow WordPress to unpack the package and install it automatically.
If you have a zip file of any plugin that you want to install then follow these steps.
Over here, I will be installing the same plugin “Elementor” by the option of “upload plugin”
You need to click on upload plugin
After this choose file.
You can either select the file from your destination folder and open it, or you can drag and drop it.
After you have selected the file, you need to click on install now.
The plugin will install and you should be able to use it.
If the plugin is not installed, you will get an error like below.
In this case, do not panic. Try to upload the plugin once again.
Once the plugin is successfully installed you will be able to see a message like below.
Do not forget to activate the plugin after it is installed.
